A digital c-type is a traditional photographic print produced from a digital file, rather than a negative. Many people think that a ‘digital print’ has to be a Giclée print, but this is not so. A Giclée print is quite different, using no chemistry or light sensitivity, only archival ink.

Here are a few suggestions for you on how to be a greener and more conscious photographer and consumer:

You could help us minimise the use of plastic bag by bringing your own one for collection of your order.

Please, return the post tubes where your artwork was rolled if you don’t longer need them.

Drop your film roll containers with us to donate them, or collect them for free if you have a use for them in mind.

Use rechargeable batteries for your camera, and always dispose them in authorised recycling points, such as selected superstores.

Try acid-free fine art papers every now and then. At Metro, we offer beautiful Giclée papers for you to choose, which are acid-free.

Experiment Direct to Media printing on recycled, reused, or existing substrates, and give your work and artistic twist.

Another important thing for all of us to consider is to shop locally. Metro Lab is all 100% London based, meaning less carbon footprint.

Metro and the planet will thank you;)

Metro Imaging is once again delighted to be partnering with Cork photo for the 2018 festival and sponsoring them with exhibition printing, events, and discounts for participants.

Founded by Louise Maher and Naomi Smith, Cork Photo festival is an artist-led initiative, highlighting local photographers in venues across the City. The open theme and inclusive approach adopted in the first year continues, allowing everyone to take part. They embrace experimentation and encourage viewers to seek out and explore.

The Cork Photo team curates exhibitions by both local and international artists, bringing together independent galleries, arts organisations, individuals, and collectives all wishing to exhibit and celebrate photography. Past festivals have toured with Brighton Photo Fringe and have also showcased work by award-winning photographers Alexandra Lethbridge and Monica Alcazar-Duarte.

The festival is now biennial, taking place during the month of April with a wide range of artists, collectives and local businesses involved. This years program promises to provide an exciting array of quality workshops, events and exhibitions including The Photobook Show – J Book Show, Triskel 40 Photo Prize and Lomography People’s Choice Awards.

Also on show will be the collective exhibition Elastic which showcases work by photographers acknowledging mental health within practice or process. This show will involve a mix of Metro’s clients and past mentorship winners -including Lynda laird, Joanne Coates, Jessica McDermott, Courtney Husslemann– in one of the CPF18 main hubs, St.Peters Church.

In addition, there will be a day-long Photo Symposium on Art + Practise involving curator and artist lead tour of Elastic, talk with editor of Source Photographic John Duncan and panel discussion with founders of the art space ‘Dali + Gala’.

Metro worked with performing artist Heather Agyepong recently producing C-type prints for her project ‘But We Are Still Here’ which takes place at the Tate Modern this month.

But We Are Still Here provokes thought, questions and through a series of events and activities considers how culture is produced. Onlookers and participants are invited to voice ideas and experiences and to listen to others whilst considering how culture is (re) produced through our everyday behaviours and activities.

Difficult questions are asked in order to provoke debate, reflection, comment and action and what it might feel like to be visible/invisible, sharing responses in the space, exchange ideas and share experiences as well as participating in a diverse range of activities from zine making to poetry, performance to workshops.

The conversation unfolding on the Tate Exchange floor is framed by a series of photographs by Heather Agyepong to create a thought-provoking installation. Reimagined as Ghanaian Ashanti Warrior Yaa Asantewaa, Agyepong appears in a series of images that raise questions of value, ownership and erasure.

For more information and detail about the exhibition and events

Metro is thrilled to be supporting Simon Brann Thorpe in his first UK solo exhibition, Toy Soldiers, which opens at the Hospital Club Gallery, London. Metro has produced Vinyl prints and large C-type prints for the exhibition which provokes a dialogue on war and conflict, through conceptual art.

At this critical time of socio-economic conflict and upheaval, Toy Soldiers blurs the boundaries between documentary photography and art as Thorpe uses real soldiers, posing as toy soldiers to shine a light upon the impact, legacy and dehumanizing effects of war.

Recently receiving two nominations for the Prix Pictet Award, Toy Soldiers is a unique collaboration between a military commander and Thorpe in the creation of a unique allegory of modern warfare. Through the project Thorpe creates a critical lens through which we view the projected metaphor of war games and reality re-constructed onto the little known conflict in Western Sahara, known as ‘Africa’s last colony’.

Sofia Vollmer Maduro, a Prix Pictet judge, comments, “By captivating the viewer with the seemingly playful device of ‘Toy Soldiers’, Simon’s images successfully counteract our growing desensitisation to images of conflict. Upon careful viewing, these striking images reveal their poignant message on the fate of victims of warfare, while alerting us to the impact on society of current trends that view war as a game.”

Toy Soldiers is exhibited as part of Photo London, a world-class photography fair and a catalyst for London’s dynamic photography community. Running between 18th and 21st May 2017, Photo London harnesses the city’s outstanding creative talent and brings together the world’s leading photographers, curators, exhibitors, dealers and the public to celebrate photography, the medium of our time. Incorporating venues including the capital’s major museums, auction houses, galleries large and small, right into the burgeoning creative communities in the East End and South London it is a must for photography lovers and creators.

The Hospital Club, 24, Endell Street, London, WC2H 9HQ

Exhibition dates: 19th – 21st May 2017
Opening times: Mon – Fri: 7am – 2am; Saturday: 8am – 2am; Sunday: 8am – 9pm

Photographic mounting describes a process of using adhesive to fix a photo print to a solid rigid material, known as a substrate. The type of photographic mounting we use at Metroprint uses large rollers to seal photographic prints to a substrate, as opposed to other warm techniques, such as heat mounting. Although photo mounting to card was common for framing photographs for some hundred years, other modern photographic materials such as foamboard, foamex and Aluminium have entered the photographic exhibition market from places like sign-making and museum exhibitions as photographers search for new and innovative methods of displaying images without a frame.

Photographic materials such as MDF and foamboard may be favoured for their durability, but would not be considered archival as they contain chemicals which will eventually colour or even disintegrate photographic paper. Where the archival longevity of a photo print is paramount, photo framing is the only truly archival technique of presenting a photograph, but materials such as Aluminium or dibond may be used where a frame is not desired for aesthetic reasons or those of weight. To help you decide which photo material to use we have prepared a chart below that outlines the relative benefits of each substrate.

Metro worked recently with the Frontline Club, producing mounted C type prints for their upcoming War Zone Freelance Exhibition (WZF).

The WZF Exhibition provides an exclusive look into the work and world of freelance journalists who cover war and conflicts in the Middle East. It is motivated by the desire to pay tribute and provoke debate on the important role those journalists play in bringing news out of conflict areas to the international public, often with little support, at their own expense and at extremely high risk.

After many years working alongside other freelance colleagues American photojournalist Osie Greenway, Danish writer and reporter Anne Alling, Dutch videographer and photojournalist Jeffry Ruigendijk and German writer and photojournalist Benjamin Hiller have created an exhibition which pulls people deep into the reporting process, informs the viewer on the people affected by war in the Middle East region and highlights both the struggles and triumphs of working independently in a high-stakes vocation.

The four WZF journalists will also be taking part in a presentation and talk at the club on Thursday 28th January, providing an in-depth look at the curating of the exhibition as well as the ambition behind the project and a Q & A session with the audience.

Additionally on Friday 29th January a panel discussion will take place on today’s freelancers and the future of the profession. Alongside the WZF journalists will be guest speakers: Benjamin Hiller, German photojournalist and writer; Jean-Paul Marthoz, Committee to Protect Journalists and Vaughan Smith, Frontline Club founder and freelance cameraman.
